Summer has arrived, the 4th of July is almost upon us, and with it comes Grand Haven’s busy ‘tourist-season’, when thousands visit our town each week, partaking of the fine beaches, shopping and dining on offer. Last week, in my ongoing series of “What’s New This Summer”, I introduced our readers to Perros Grandes, the new Mexican hot-dog restaurant on the waterfront, whose spicy concoctions and crunchy taco-dog-buns may well give Pronto-Pups some real competition this summer. This week, I’ve turned my attention to shopping, and am pleased to share the good news that Grand Haven now boasts a unique new gift shop, called Majestic Majesty, owned and operated by a local Wiccan coven known as “Our Ladies of Majestic Majesty”.
Majestic Majesty is a charming boutique, with rustic decor and set in a lovely, naturalistic landscape which evokes the very spirit and enticing essence of neo-paganism at its most empowering. While the shop currently resides in the woods along Lake Avenue (across from Lake Forest Cemetery), co-owner Rosemary Woodhouse, also Matron to the coven, is quick to point out that the shop’s precise location is likely to change with the seasons, and encourages shoppers to Like the Majestic Majesty Facebook Page in order to stay abreast of the shop’s current location.
Woodhouse, along with her twelve co-owners and fellow Ladies of Majestic Majesty, held their Grand Opening rituals last Saturday, giving a rare public-performance of “Drawing Down The Moon”, a central ritual in many Wiccan traditions, wherein a coven’s High Priestess enters a trance and requests that the Goddess or Triple Goddess, symbolized by the Moon, enter her body and speak through her. The performance was a real crowd-pleaser, and aside from a few noisy protesters from the Morally Indignant Liberty Foundation, the Ladies were pleased with the warm reception, and brisk sales, they received from the community.
“Turnout was so much better than we expected”, says Rosemary, “and I’m truly sorry we upset the members of M.I.L.F., but it’s very difficult explaining to them that while duotheism and bitheism are indeed traditional beliefs in Wicca, there are many covens, including ours, whose beliefs range from polytheism to pantheism or even monism in some cases. We should be taking down the walls between us, not building bigger ones, and I did offer each of them a coupon for 25% off their first purchase from our gift-shop.”
For the upcoming Holiday-weekend, Majestic Majesty will be open several hours each day, and then again at moonrise each night (but closed during the waterfront fireworks display on Saturday evening). Our Ladies of Majestic Majesty have also announced that, after the success of last weekend’s Grand Opening, they will be performing another public ritual on August 1, when they celebrate the Sabbat of Lughnasadh. If you’re shopping in Grand Haven this weekend, stop and say hello to the Ladies; and while you’re there, check out their gorgeous pentagram earrings.
